Energy Efficiency: One of the most vital parts of major appliances is its energy efficiency. Before selecting a certain model, estimate your monthly or yearly energy costs from this appliance, especially if it uses hot water. It may be more cost effective over time to purchase a more expensive, more energy efficient model.

Special Features: What features would be beneficial to you as you use the appliance? Extra cleaning features, safety features, electronic features, or accessories that will complement its use may be very helpful to you and worth extra costs. Some examples may be a built-in icemaker in a refrigerator or a self-cleaning oven.

Appliance Capacity: Especially with refrigerators, and washers and dryers, keep in mind your unique needs when choosing appliances. Extra capacity washers and dryers can cut down on the number of loads each week, while large capacity refrigerators may reduce the number of trips to the grocery store. On the other hand, too much space can lower efficiency. Generally, you need about 8-10 cubic feet of refrigerator space for two people and another cubic foot for each additional member of the family.

Home Capacity: While choosing a larger, more efficient model may make sense to your pocketbook, the space required to house the appliance may be a limitation. Pre-measure spaces before shopping to ensure you get the right size for your home.
