Decks and Fences
Inspection: Some decks and fences may require special building permits and inspections by your city building inspector. After deciding on a layout, take the plans to the building inspector. Also, check city and neighborhood building regulations to make sure your project is allowable in your area. Depending on where you place new fencing, you may need to use the deed to your home to determine exact boundaries and any restrictions of common areas with your neighbors.

Applying Stains and Sealers: First, check to see if the wood can absorb the stain or sealer by sprinkling water onto the deck. If the water absorbs quickly, it is time for a new coat of sealant. It is then best to lightly sand the deck using an 80-grit sandpaper and a pole sander and then apply deck cleaner. Allow up to two days for the cleaner to dry before applying the sealer. Choose a sealer according to the type of wood, weather conditions and amount of traffic and apply according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Types of Fencing: Chainlink fences are good for security purposes and are low maintenance. They are relatively inexpensive, easy to install, and good for pool areas because they won't rust in humid conditions. Wood fencing is an economical choice for a variety of fences. Wood fences can be very durable and long lasting as long as they are maintained properly. Vinyl or PVC fencing is a good choice for light-duty boundaries. They never need painting and won't rust, and although the inital cost may be higher the overall maintenance costs of vinyl fencing are much lower than wood.
