Roofs and Siding
Cleaning Gutters: When cleaning gutters on your home it is best to use a ladder rather than perching on the roof above. For a single story home a step ladder should be sufficient. You should clean the gutters twice a year, in the spring and in the fall. Cleaning on a dry day can make removing leaves and twigs easier. You can use a small garden trowel to loosen clumps. Spray with the garden hose afterwards to wash out small debris and also check the drainage of the downspouts.

Replacing Vinyl Siding: Replacing loose or damaged vinyl siding can be a simple job. Use a siding removal tool to unlock the piece of siding. Keep the siding panels in order that you remove them, so you can size the new panels exactly. Use a pair of tin snips to cut the new panel to fit. Lock the new panel into the lock bar of the panel below it, and use roofing nails to hang the new siding, leaving enough space for the panel to expand and contract. After all the new panels are in place, go back with the siding removal tool and hook the old lip into the lock bar.

Roof and Shingle Maintenance: Roofs should be inspected for leaks or damaged shingles twice a year, in the spring and the fall. For fixing leaks, you can either seal minor cracks and holes by caulking or glue down loose shingles with roofing cement. You may want to replace a damaged or missing shingle. However, if the roof is 15 years old or shows extreme signs of wear such as ceiling spots, curling, algae growth, blistering or rotting, it may be necessary to replace the entire roof.
